Fairytale Follies

When the large language model-based chatbot ChatGPT came out last November, I (like many others) immediately used it to make pages upon pages of stupid stories. This is one of them.

The plot of this story is mine; the words are ChatGPT’s. To demonstrate what the bot was capable of on its own, I tried to minimize editing—the majority of the 20 chapters, including chapter 13, were copied verbatim from ChatGPT’s output. Of the ones that did require editing, no more than one or two sentences were altered, with the exception of chapters 11 and 20, which were pasted together from two separate attempts.

It was quite challenging to craft a comedic tale that played nicely with the chatbot’s robotic tone. In the end, I decided to throw the characters into increasingly ridiculous situations, and let the humour come from the bot’s markedly deadpan delivery. I hope you enjoy the results!

1: Jasmine¹

“You want me to grant you super speed, super strength, infinite knowledge, the ability to create portals to other worlds, and…an unlimited supply of SpaghettiOs? All at once?” the genie asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes, please,” Jasmine said, grinning from ear to ear. “I mean, I’m happy to have all the other powers too, but the SpaghettiOs are really what I’m most excited about. They’re my absolute favorite food. I could eat them every day and never get sick of them.”

“I’m sorry, Princess, but I can only grant three wishes. No matter how big or small,” the genie explained.

Jasmine’s face fell, but she quickly recovered. “Well, in that case, I have a plan. For my first wish, I’d like a pencil. And for my second wish, I’d like a long scroll,” she said.

“A pencil and a scroll? That’s it?” the genie asked, surprised.

“Yes, just those two things. Trust me, I have a plan,” Jasmine replied with a wink.

The genie shrugged and granted her wishes, producing a pencil and a long scroll out of thin air.

Jasmine eagerly grabbed the pencil and began writing all of her wishes on the scroll. She included everything she had originally requested, including the unlimited supply of SpaghettiOs. She couldn’t wait to have all the SpaghettiOs she could possibly eat!

When she was finished, she turned to the genie and held up the scroll. “And for my third and final wish, I wish for everything on this scroll to come true,” she said.

The genie laughed and shook his head. “That’s not possible, Princess. You can’t just wish for everything on a scroll to come true. That’s not how it works,” he said.

But to his surprise, the scroll began to glow and shimmer, and all of the wishes listed on it came true. Jasmine gasped in delight as she felt herself gaining infinite knowledge and the ability to create portals to other worlds. She felt a surge of super strength and super speed, and an endless supply of SpaghettiOs appeared before her.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Jasmine exclaimed, hugging the genie tightly. “I can’t wait to dig into these SpaghettiOs! I’ve never been able to eat as many as I want before.”

“I’m glad I could help,” the genie said with a smile. “But remember, these powers come with great responsibility. Use them wisely.”

“I will,” Jasmine promised, already planning all of the amazing things she would do with her new abilities. And of course, she would never forget to take time out to enjoy her endless supply of SpaghettiOs.

2: Elsa²

Queen Elsa was sitting in her throne room, feeling a deep sense of restlessness. She had been ruling over Arendelle for a few years now, and while she loved helping her people and making sure everything ran smoothly, she felt like there was something missing. She had always been fascinated by the practical applications of her ice powers, and she had been thinking a lot lately about how she could use them to create something truly extraordinary.

As she sat there, lost in thought, her sister Anna walked into the room. “Hey Elsa, what’s on your mind?” she asked.

Elsa sighed heavily. “I had this strange dream last night, Anna. I was in my workshop, and I heard a voice calling to me. It was a refrigerator, and it was telling me that I could use my powers to create something amazing.”

Anna raised an eyebrow. “A refrigerator? That’s definitely strange. What do you think it means?”

Elsa thought for a moment. “I’m not sure, but I feel like it’s a sign. I’ve always been fascinated by refrigerators and how they affect our daily lives. And with my ice powers, I feel like I could create something truly revolutionary in this field.”

Anna grinned. “That’s a brilliant idea, Elsa! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.”

Determined to make her vision a reality, Elsa set to work. She spent countless hours in her workshop, experimenting with different materials and designs, trying to come up with the perfect way to harness her ice powers for refrigerators. After much trial and error, she finally hit upon a prototype for a new kind of refrigerator. It was sleek and efficient, using a combination of ice and advanced technology to keep things cold and fresh.

Excited to show her sister her creation, Elsa invited Anna to come and see the prototype in action. Anna was amazed by the unit’s performance, and she immediately saw the potential for such a product on the market.

“Elsa, this is amazing! You have to bring this to market. I’m sure it will be a huge success,” Anna exclaimed.

And so, with Anna’s encouragement and support, Elsa made the decision to start a refrigerator company. She called it “Frosty Fresh,” and the name quickly caught on with the people of Arendelle. The company quickly gained a reputation for producing top-quality refrigerators that were reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly.

As the company grew, Elsa found herself enjoying the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. She loved coming up with new ideas and seeing them come to fruition, and she was proud to be creating something that was making a real difference in the world. And every time she looked at one of her refrigerators, she couldn’t help but smile, knowing that it was all thanks to a strange dream and the incredible power of her ice.

3: Snow White³

As Snow White gazed out at the rows of glowing computer screens, a fire burned in her eyes. She had always been fascinated by the world of cryptocurrency, and she was determined to make a name for herself in the world of bitcoin mining.

“My dearest dwarves,” she declared, her voice filled with conviction. “We are on the brink of greatness. With your help, I know we can mine more bitcoin than anyone in the land. Together, we will become the greatest bitcoin miners the world has ever seen!”

The dwarves looked at Snow White with adoration in their eyes. They knew that she was a woman of vision, and they were more than happy to follow her into the unknown.

“We’ll work day and night, Snow White,” Grumpy declared, his face set in determination. “We won’t rest until we’ve mined every last bitcoin in the world!”

And so, with Snow White leading the charge, the team set to work. They mined bitcoin with a fierce determination, their fingers flying across the keyboard as they solved complex mathematical equations.

As the bitcoins started rolling in, Snow White’s operation began to thrive. She became a well-respected figure in the bitcoin community, known for her shrewd business sense and her ability to spot the next big thing.

But Snow White wasn’t content to just sit back and watch the bitcoins pour in. She was always looking for ways to innovate and push the boundaries of what was possible. She experimented with new mining techniques and invested in the latest hardware, always striving to stay ahead of the competition.

And as time went on, Snow White’s mining operation continued to flourish. She had turned a small cottage in the forest into a bitcoin powerhouse, and she had the Seven Dwarves to thank for it. Together, she and the Seven Dwarves had created a thriving business that was changing the face of the cryptocurrency world.

4: Belle⁴

Princess Belle sat on a bench in the castle gardens, her book of fairy tales open in front of her. She had always loved reading stories of knights in shining armor, princesses in towers, and happily ever afters. But as she turned the pages, something dawned on her.

“Adam, come here,” she called to the prince, who was practicing his swordplay nearby.

He strode over, sweat glistening on his forehead. “What is it, Belle?”

“I just realized something,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I think we’re inside a story.”

Adam chuckled and shook his head. “Belle, you’re always getting lost in those books of yours. This is real life, not some fairy tale.”

But Belle persisted. “Think about it. The handsome prince, the beautiful princess, the wicked witch, the enchanted castle. It’s all right out of a storybook. And the way things keep happening to us, it’s just too perfect to be true.”

Adam’s laughter faded as he considered her words. “I suppose it does seem a bit like a fairy tale,” he admitted. “But that doesn’t mean we’re not really here. It’s just the way our lives have turned out.”

Belle nodded, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Was it all just a script, predetermined by some higher power? Or was it all just a coincidence, a series of events that happened to align in the most fantastical way? As she pondered these possibilities, a new thought occurred to her. What if they were in a story generated by ChatGPT, a powerful language processing tool that could create entire worlds and storylines based on a few prompts? Could it be possible that their entire reality was just a creation of a computer program?

She couldn’t be sure, but one thing was certain: her life had taken on the air of a fairy tale, and she wasn’t sure how to feel about it.

5: Elsa⁵

The icy winds howled through the factory as Queen Elsa stormed through the halls, her long white dress billowing behind her. She was on a mission, and nothing was going to stand in her way.

“Where are those refrigerators?” she demanded, her voice echoing off the walls. “I need them now!”

Her workers scrambled to meet her demands, their eyes wide with fear. They knew better than to cross Queen Elsa and her powerful ice powers.

“Here they are, Your Majesty!” one of them shouted, presenting a row of gleaming refrigerators.

Queen Elsa nodded in approval, her piercing blue eyes scanning the machines with a critical gaze. “These will do,” she said, her voice laced with ice. “But remember, I demand perfection. If these refrigerators are not the best on the market, you will all pay the price.”

The workers nodded frantically, their hands shaking as they returned to their tasks. They knew that Queen Elsa meant business, and they were determined to make her proud.

As the refrigerators began to roll off the assembly line, Queen Elsa watched with a fierce determination. She had built this company from the ground up, using her ice powers to create a product that was not only functional, but also beautiful. And now, her hard work was paying off.

“These refrigerators will be the envy of the kingdom,” she declared, her voice ringing with pride. “They will be the symbol of my reign, a testament to my strength and my determination. And nothing will stand in my way.”

With that, Queen Elsa turned on her heel and stormed out of the factory, her ice powers crackling with energy. She had a kingdom to rule and a company to run, and she was not about to let anything stand in her way.

6: Jasmine & Belle⁶

Princess Jasmine stepped out of the portal and into Princess Belle’s living room, her eyes wide with amazement. She had never been able to travel to other worlds before, and she couldn’t believe how easy it had been with her new powers.

Belle, who had been sitting on the couch reading a book, looked up in surprise as Jasmine appeared out of nowhere.

“Who are you?” she asked, setting aside her book.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude. My name is Jasmine. I found a genie and he granted me three wishes. But I wanted more than that, so I asked him for a pencil and a long scroll. I wrote down all of my wishes on the scroll, including super speed, super strength, infinite knowledge, the ability to create portals to other worlds, and an unlimited supply of SpaghettiOs,” Jasmine explained, grinning from ear to ear. “And then I used my third wish to make everything on the scroll come true.”

“Wow, that’s incredible! I’ve never heard of anyone getting more than three wishes before,” Belle said, impressed. “I’ve always wanted to visit other worlds too. Can you take me with you sometime?”

“Of course! I’d be happy to show you around,” Jasmine replied, happy to have made a new friend.

And so, the two princesses set off on an adventure, exploring other worlds and having all sorts of exciting experiences together. They quickly became good friends and promised to always be there for each other, no matter where their travels took them.

7: Ariel⁷

Ariel the mermaid knew that she wanted more than anything to be able to walk on land and experience the world beyond the ocean. So she approached the evil sea witch Ursula, determined to find a way to make her dream a reality.

“Ursula, I beg of you, please give me legs,” Ariel pleaded.

“You know, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the idea that we’re inside a story,” Belle said, looking out at the vast expanse of the ocean. “I mean, everything seems so perfect and magical. It’s like we’re living in a fairy tale.”

Jasmine raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” she asked.

“Well, think about it. We’re both princesses, we have these amazing powers and adventures, and everything always works out in the end,” Belle explained. “It’s like we’re characters in a book or a movie. Or even in a story generated by ChatGPT, a powerful language processing tool that can create entire worlds and storylines based on only a few prompts.”

The two princesses continued walking along the beach, enjoying the beauty of the world around them and the feeling of being part of something bigger than themselves. They knew that no matter what challenges they faced, they would always have each other’s support and love.

9: Snow White⁹

Snow White sat at her kitchen table, her eyes filled with tears as she stared intently at her laptop. She had spent countless hours doing research in the hopes of finding a way to improve her bitcoin-mining operation.

10: Jasmine, Belle, & Ariel¹⁰

Princess Jasmine and Princess Belle stepped out of the portal and into a beautiful underwater world. They looked around in awe, taking in the colorful fish swimming all around them and the shimmering coral reefs.

Just then, Ariel appeared from behind a rock, her red hair flowing behind her as she walked towards the two princesses. They were surprised to see that Ariel had legs, just like them.

“Who are you?” Ariel asked, looking at the unfamiliar faces.

“I’m Jasmine, and this is Belle. We’re sorry to intrude, but we have the ability to travel to other worlds through portals,” Jasmine explained.

“Wow, that’s so cool! The engineers nodded frantically, determined to help their queen solve this mystery. They searched and searched, but they could find no clues as to who might have installed the mining equipment.

Queen Elsa was furious. She had spent years building up her refrigerator company, and she couldn’t believe that someone would try to sabotage it like this. She vowed to find out who was responsible and bring them to justice.

But despite her best efforts, Queen Elsa was never able to discover the identity of the mysterious saboteur. The case remained a mystery, and the perpetrator was never brought to light.

12: Jasmine, Belle, & Ariel¹²

Princess Jasmine, Princess Belle, and Princess Ariel stepped out of the portal and into an interesting digital world. The world was filled with bright colors and strange shapes, and the three princesses were amazed by the sights and sounds around them.

Jasmine grinned from ear to ear. “Want to see the powers I received from that genie?” she asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Yes, please!” Ariel and Belle exclaimed in unison.

Ariel and Belle’s jaws dropped in amazement. “How did you do that so quickly?” they asked.

“It’s all thanks to my infinite knowledge,” Jasmine said with a smile. “And, since I also wished for an unlimited supply of SpaghettiOs, I can summon a plate of them whenever I want.”

She snapped her fingers, and a steaming hot plate of SpaghettiOs appeared before them. The three princesses eagerly dug in, grateful to have such a delicious snack to share.

Sleeping Beauty was fast asleep, as per usual. No surprise there, since it’s kind of her thing. I mean, I guess she could try switching it up and being awake for once, but where’s the fun in that?

14: Snow White¹⁴

Snow White stood in front of her team of miners, her eyes filled with tears as she looked around at the bustling mining operation. It had been a long and difficult journey, but they had finally achieved their goal.

“I can’t believe it,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “We started with nothing but a dream, and now look at us. We’re the most successful bitcoin-mining operation in the land.”

“It’s all thanks to the brilliant idea you had,” Grumpy said, grinning at Snow White through his own tears. “I still can’t believe how well it worked.”

“We couldn’t have done it without your leadership and vision,” Doc said, his voice thick with emotion as he nodded his head in agreement. “You truly are a remarkable woman.”

“Thank you, everyone,” Snow White said, her voice choked with tears as she looked around at her team. “This success is all thanks to your hard work and dedication. I’m so proud of all of you.”

As the miners celebrated their achievement, Snow White knew that they had truly accomplished something special. And she knew that with their determination and resilience, they could achieve even greater things in the future. They were unstoppable, and nothing could stand in their way.

15: Elsa¹⁵

Queen Elsa sat at her desk, her face contorted with rage and disbelief as she stared at the numbers on her computer screen. The electricity bill for her refrigerator company had just come in, and the cost was staggering.

“This can’t be right,” she hissed, her fingers trembling as she scrolled through the data. “How could our electricity usage have skyrocketed like this?”

She summoned her team of engineers with a flick of her wrist, and they arrived in her office, their faces grim with worry. Together, they set out to investigate the cause of the sudden increase in energy consumption.

As they examined the refrigerators, they were shocked to discover that all of them had been secretly mining bitcoin. “What the hell is going on here?” Queen Elsa roared, her voice shaking with fury. “Who authorized this?”

The engineers looked at each other nervously, but nobody seemed to have any answers. It was clear that someone had installed bitcoin-mining equipment in all of the refrigerators, without Queen Elsa’s knowledge or consent.

The engineers nodded, their faces pale with fear. They set to work, carefully removing the mining equipment and restoring the refrigerators to their original state. It was a long and difficult process, but in the end, they were successful.

Queen Elsa collapsed into her chair, her chest heaving with emotion. She couldn’t believe that someone had tried to sabotage her company like this. But she was grateful that her team had been able to fix the problem and restore the refrigerators to their original state.

From then on, Queen Elsa kept a closer eye on her company and its operations. She knew that she couldn’t let anyone jeopardize its success again. She would do whatever it took to protect her kingdom and her throne.

16: Jasmine, Belle, & Ariel¹⁶

Princess Jasmine, Princess Belle, and Princess Ariel stepped out of the portal and into a truly alien world. They were amazed by the strange and beautiful landscapes all around them, with towering mountains and sparkling lakes that seemed to glow from within. The plant and animal life in this world was unlike anything they had ever seen before, with exotic flowers that seemed to dance in the breeze and creatures with shimmering scales and glowing eyes.

The three princesses decided to set up a picnic in a clearing by a bubbling stream. They laid out a blanket and unpacked a basket of Jasmine’s SpaghettiOs, eager to explore this new world and enjoy a meal together.

As they sat and ate, Jasmine and Belle turned to Ariel and said, “We’ve been thinking a lot lately about the idea that we’re all part of a story.
